A Message from Fr. Paul Rutten, Pastor

I know the changes ahead touch real habits, memories, and hopes. Some will welcome them; others may feel disappointment or worry.

What does not change: Jesus in the Eucharist. If we keep our eyes on Christ, grace will meet us—steadily and sufficiently.

​

I am hopeful about what the Lord is preparing for our pastorate. Let us entrust this time to Christ, under the care of Our Lady and through the intercession of St. John Paul II!

The Divine Mercy Pastorate Case Statement

I am excited for you to have the opportunity to learn more about the plans for St. John Paul II Parish through the case statement included in this email. This has been years in the making, but I am certain the time is right for us to move forward with a bold plan for our community and the Pastorate.

There is a lot packed into this document, so please take some time to read it all.

 

Maximizing Excellence will be gathering your feedback and providing us with the feasibility report Bishop DeGrood asked for at the JP2 Townhall. We can expect the results of the study in February or Early March. Please continue to keep all of this in your daily prayers and St. John Paul II, pray for us!

FAQ's

  1. When will we find out the results of the feasibility study?

    1. Barring any unexpected delays in the process feasibility study results will be presented to the Task Force in late February. At that time they will assess and provide their recommendation.

  2. Does the building of St. John Paul II provide the chance for Christ the King School to relocate and open a school on that campus?

    1. ​Based on the data collected by the Board of the School System, there is not enough interest or capacity to move forward with building an elementary school as part of St. John Paul II at present time. The design of St. John Paul II has taken into consideration possible growth in the school system, making it seamless to build an elementary school adjacent to St. John Paul II if demand necessitates expansion.

  3. How many pastorate members are involved in determining the future of St. John Paul II?

    1. ​In addition to the hundreds of individuals and families who have committed input and passion to the future of St. Paul John II in past years, 450+ families across the entire pastorate footprint, have been asked to participate in the feasibility study. Those invited to participate have shown longtime support toward their parish and the pastorate. If you have not been contacted and believe you should be included, we welcome your input. Please email us if you would like to complete the donor survey dedicated to seeking input on the pastorate vision. 

  4. What if we raise less than $25 million?

    1. ​A notable motivation for conducting a feasibility study is to ensure the amount needed to build St. Paul John II can be raised. This process will advise the pastorate on the best approach for the parish’s future and how best to secure the needed funds.

  5. What happens to Christ the King parish if the school is consolidated?

    1. ​Christ the King parish will continue to meet the needs of its parishioners and the Divine Mercy Pastorate.  Because Christ the King parish owns the school’s physical buildings, Divine Mercy Pastorate is committed to identifying the best use of the facility and land in the best interest of the parish and pastorate. In the first quarter of 2026 a committee will be formed to discern the future of the school campus.

  6. With St. Mary’s school buildings in need of renovation, why are we focusing on a new church?

    1. Thanks to the generosity of our parishioners, the “Grateful Eucharistic Parish Campaign” campaign was tremendously successful, meeting the needs identified in the campaign. As a thoughtful incorporation, funds in the “Grateful Eucharistic Parish Campaign” were intentionally set aside for St. Mary School in order to address maintenance needs. Divine Mercy Pastorate recognizes the needs of St. Mary’s do not go away amidst the importance of responding to growth. The investment in the proposed capital campaign takes into consideration all Divine Mercy Pastorate needs. By considering capital needs as a pastorate – and not by individual parishes – DMP can incorporate the needs and opportunities at St. Mary’s as part of the pastorate vision. Additionally, once the feasibility study's conclusion has been presented to the pastorate, St. Mary will begin a process of discernment to determine the best way forward and address the aging school facilities.

  7. Will resources be taken away from St. Mary and Christ the King to fund this new project?

    1. ​No. The funding for the new campus will come through a dedicated capital campaign, supported by those who feel called to invest in this vision. Parish operations at St. Mary and Christ the King remain protected.

  8. What about the two other pieces of property that St. John Paul II owns?

    1. ​Two pieces of property, 20 acres on Minnesota and Willow, and 15 acres on Bitterroot and Western, are owned by the diocese. St. John Paul II has not owned either piece of land. 

  9. Is the purchase of the New 15 acres a part of the $25,000,000 in this case statement? 

    1. ​No. Through previous fundraising efforts, St. John Paul II’s building fund currently has the needed funds to purchase the needed 15 acres of land.

Pastorate Office Move

​With the Ministry Center lease coming to an end in October, our Pastorate offices will soon return to St. Mary and Christ the King. These are shared Pastorate offices—not “individual” parish offices. You can receive support for any parish at either location. 

 

This change marks an exciting step forward for our Pastorate, creating more welcoming and accessible spaces for ministry, connection, and daily parish life.

Beginning the week of Oct 14th, daily Masses for St. John Paul II will be held at Christ the King (Tuesday, 5:30 PM) and St. Mary (Thursday, 8:00 AM), while intention donations remain credited to St. John Paul II.
